Giving Sum will once again offer a $50,000 grant, available to eligible non-profits via its 2010 process. Requirements for applicants will be posted in early summer. If you would like to be added to our mailing list or if you have questions regarding the grant, please email us at grants@givingsum.org.
Starfish Initiative will receive a $50,000 grant for a leadership camp for up to 300 academically promising, economically disadvantaged high school students, attending more than 30 different high schools in greater Indianapolis. Giving Sum members will support the grant by assisting with the curriculum for the camp, serving as counselors, trainers and facilitators and providing job shadowing and community service opportunities for Starfish participants.
Starfish Initiative is one of central Indiana's most effective organizations that empower smart underprivileged kids to get to college by pairing them one-on-one with college graduate mentors. Headquartered in Indianapolis, they offer their "Starfish Scholars" leadership training, community service opportunities, a place to study and hang out, and much more. This school year, they will serve 230 high school students in 30 high schools in Marion County.
"According to the 2009 Cities in Crisis report from America's Promise Alliance, only 30 percent of urban high school students in Indianapolis graduate," stated Marty Posch, Giving Sum president and co-founder. "Many of our members are the beneficiaries of opportunities afforded to us through education so it's an issue of real interest to our members and one that we hope will have a lasting, sustainable impact on our community."
"We couldn't be more excited," said Joyce Johnson, Starfish Executive Director.
"We are honored to have been selected as the 2009 Giving+Sum grant recipient. And because ‘giving back' is a value we work to instill in our Starfish Scholars, we are just as thrilled that Giving+Sum is the kind of organization that is willing and able to get in the trenches and help their recipients do good work."
The pool of 90 grant applicants was narrowed to five finalists: Starfish Initiative, Noble of Indiana, Outreach, Inc, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and DonorsChoose.org. Each finalist made a presentation to Giving Sum's members to describe their proposed program. Giving Sum members then voted to select the recipient. Giving Sum will work with each of these organizations to determine ways to engage members and provide opportunities to support their efforts.
Each year Giving Sum will grant 100 percent of its membership contributions to a nonprofit organization in Indianapolis working towards change, innovation and community good. Giving Sum members share a vision of our community in which everyone participates in a movement to create positive change. Giving Sum members commit to combining their personal resources together with other members' resources in order to create greater social impact. The three components of the Giving Sum equation that members offer to the community are:
Eligible nonprofit organizations may submit only one application to request a grant of $50,000 (Money), volunteer hours (Time) and advocacy efforts (Voice) from Giving Sum to support general operations or special projects in one of Giving Sum's five Focus Areas (described below). Grant funded activities must take place after Dec. 1, 2009, and recipients have up to 24 months to utilize the grant funds. However, Giving Sum volunteers' "Time" and "Voice" will be guaranteed for only one year. Preference will be given to applications that meaningfully and creatively engage Giving Sum members in innovative, high-impact initiatives.
To be eligible for support from Giving Sum, applicants must meet and adhere to the following criteria:
The purpose of the Giving Sum Equation is to support a mix of citywide and local community development activities by providing volunteers, advocacy and funding. The resources made available through this grant request will assist nonprofit organizations working in the following five focus areas:
Each organization must select one of the above focus areas in which to apply. Applicants should select the focus area which best describes the primary operations or mission of their organization. If your organization and/or request is multi-disciplinary, please select the category which best describes the activities that will be carried out using the Giving Sum grant. Preliminary review of the applications occurs within each of the five focus areas.
The grant may be used only for the purposes described in the organization's request for support to Giving Sum. Furthermore, the awardee organization may not use any Giving Sum grant funds to lobby or otherwise attempt to influence legislation, to influence the outcome of any public election, or to carry on any voter registration drive. The organization selected to receive a grant will be required to provide to Giving Sum an Annual Report at the end of the grant term summarizing project progress and how Giving Sum resources were utilized.
